The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has granted the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program deeming authority, and its accreditations can also be used to meet many state certification requirements.
The CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program, begun in the 1960s, is an internationally recognized program for certifying laboratory quality based upon inspections conducted by practicing laboratory professionals. The program utilizes a detailed checklist of thorough requirements to examine a laboratory. CAP inspectors review a laboratory’s records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years; the qualifications of all staff; equipment and facilities; safety program and record; and overall management.
The CAP Program assures that a laboratory meets the highest standards of excellence by producing high quality test results that positively impact patient care. Berkeley HeartLab fulfilled the key federal and state certification requirements necessary for achieving CAP accreditation, emphasizing the quality of the laboratory and the test results.
What is CAP accreditation?
The goal of the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program is to improve patient safety by advancing the quality of pathology and laboratory services through education, standard setting, and ensuring laboratories meet or exceed regulatory requirements. Upon successful completion of the inspection process, the laboratory is awarded CAP accreditation and becomes part of an exclusive group of more than 6,000 laboratories worldwide that have met the highest standards of excellence.
