HDL-S10GGE®
HDL Segmented Gradient Gel Electrophoresis is a Berkeley HeartLab proprietary test that measures HDL size as a distribution of five subclasses (HDL 2b, 2a, 3a, 3b, and 3c). The HDL2b subclass best reflects the efficacy of the reverse cholesterol transport system and cholesterol clearance by the liver.
Clinical Implications:
Low levels of HDL2b are correlated with a two to three-fold increased cardiovascular disease risk and have been shown to predict progression of coronary atherosclerosis and disease severity.
Treatment considerations:
- Common first-line pharmacological considerations:
- Nicotinic acid
- Nicotinic acid/statin formulation
- Fibrates - minimal effect?
- Lifestyle changes:
- Fat-restricted, cardioprotective diet
- Weight loss
- Regular exercise
- Smoking cessation
