Management Team

The Executive Management Team at Berkeley HeartLab is comprised of:


Frank R. Ruderman
President

In 1998 Frank R. Ruderman was appointed Chairman and CEO of Berkeley HeartLab, Inc., a cardiovascular informatics company with proprietary lipoprotein technology used to assess coronary artery disease risk and to monitor patient progress to personalized treatment plans. From 1994 to 1997, Mr. Ruderman was President/CEO and acting CFO of Genomyx, a DNA sequencing and functional genomics instrument and consumables company which was sold to Beckman Instruments in October 1996. It now operates as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Beckman Instruments and develops and markets life science research tools for genomics research with initial targeting on functional genomics analysis and service. He had been a consultant and a director of Genomyx from its founding at Genentech in 1989 with Human Genome Project funding.

From 1990 to 1994, he founded and, as a consultant, was acting President, COO and a Director of Physiometrix, an early stage neuromonitoring medical device company which went public in April 1996 at a $60 million valuation. At the time of implementing a planned transition to a full-time President/CEO in December 1993, the Company had four rounds of venture capital, three patents issued and six pending, and three products approved by the FDA. The first of the approved products, the EEG System, was manufactured in-house and was commercialized in Q3 1994. During this period, Mr. Ruderman also helped to found two additional medical device companies, Intella Interventional and Cardiac Pathways, as spin-outs of Physiometrix.

From 1985 to 1990, Mr. Ruderman served as a Board member, President, COO and CFO of American Bionetics, a publicly traded life science instrument and consumables company. The company was sold to BioGenex in 1990 after finalizing two acquisitions and completing joint ventures with Millipore and Dupont. From 1981 to 1985, he served as a member of the Board and the first President/CEO of Mast Immunosystems, a private immunodiagnostics company in allergy diagnostics and liquid handling systems which was sold to Hitachi in October 1996. Prior to this 16 year entrepreneurial experience, Mr. Ruderman had spent 10 years (1972-1981) in various domestic and international corporate executive positions with Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, Pfizer Diagnostics and Millipore.

Mr. Ruderman is one of four founding members of Tenex Medical Investors, a Bay Area network of angel investors formed in 1997 with an excess of over 100 members, to fill a growing need for early stage investment and intellectual capital in emerging life science opportunities. He is also Chairman, CEO, and a Managing Partner of Tenex Greenhouse Ventures, a new concept venture fund partnered with Sanderling Ventures. The fund integrates life science angel and venture capital financing, and nurtures early stage life science opportunities while leveraging the intellectual capital resident in the Tenex network. He serves on the Board of Advisors of the Foster Center for Private Equity at Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College, and is a frequent lecturer and panelist on entrepreneurship and angel financing.

Mr. Ruderman has an MBA from the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College (1972), an MA in vascular physiology from Boston University (1969), and a BS in biology from Tufts University (1967).

Warren “Andy” Ambrose
Chief Finance and Operations Officer

Warren “Andy” Ambrose joined Berkeley HeartLab, Inc. in March of 1999 as the CFO. Mr. Ambrose has over 20 years of experience as Chief Financial Officer in environments ranging from a venture capital start-up to a company with annual revenue exceeding $5 billion. Prior to Berkeley HeartLab, Inc., Mr. Ambrose was Senior Vice President, Chief Finance and Operations Officer of Miller Freeman, Inc. for six years, one of the world’s largest business media companies specializing in the trade show and trade publication markets. Prior to Miller Freeman, Mr. Ambrose was Executive Vice President and CFO of First Image Management, growing the company from $6 million revenue business to over $240 million in the market of computer output management.

Mr. Ambrose’s responsibilities have included leadership of Finance, Accounting, Treasury, Internal Audit, Circulation, Production, Product Sales Distribution, Administration/Facilities, Human Resources/Employee Benefits, Information Technology, Directories, Data Products and e-Media departments with a staff exceeding 500. Mr. Ambrose has extensive experience with mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, divestitures, and restructure programs with over 50 separate transactions and a total value exceeding $1 billion. Throughout his career, Mr. Ambrose has frequently dealt with investment bankers, venture capitalists, investors, attorneys, public accountants, financial institutions, and board of directors. Mr. Ambrose became a Certified Public Accountant while at Arthur Andersen & Co., has a BA degree with Dean’s List honors from Stanford University and an MBA degree from the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration at Dartmouth College.

Jonathan S. Wolin
General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer

Jonathan Wolin joined the Company in 2006 and is responsible for the Company’s legal and regulatory affairs. Mr. Wolin has more than 20 years of legal and business management experience.

Mr. Wolin was a Senior Counsel at the K & R Law group in Los Angeles, California prior to joining the Company. Prior to his K & R Law Group experience, Mr. Wolin was the general counsel and chief compliance officer at United WestLabs, Inc. and previously served as the vice president of internal audit and chief compliance officer at DaVita Inc. He also has prior law firm experience as a health care attorney at Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky & Popeo. Mr. Wolin earned his bachelor of science degree from the University of Maryland, his law degree from Catholic University in Washington, D.C., and his MBA from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He is also a licensed Certified Public Accountant in the State of Maryland.

Cleland C. Landolt, M.D.
Chief Medical Officer and Vice President, Corporate Development

Dr. Landolt joined Berkeley HeartLab in July, 2004 and became Medical Director in October, 2004 and Chief Medical Officer in December, 2005. Prior to joining Berkeley he worked from 2001-2004 at Collateral Therapeutics, Inc., a division of Schering, AG focused on the clinical development of cardiovascular gene therapy. As Vice President of Business Development at Collateral, he brought his expertise as a cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon to focus on new strategic development and partnership opportunities. Prior to joining Collateral, Dr. Landolt had a successful private cardiac surgical practice, as well as prior teaching appointments at Harvard University, the University of California, San Francisco, and Emory University. Dr. Landolt did his undergraduate studies at Harvard College graduating Cum Laude in Biology. He received his M.D. from Cornell University Medical College and did his internship and residency in General Surgery at the Beth Israel Hospital, Boston. Dr. Landolt held a post-doctoral research fellowship in pulmonary physiology at the Cardiovascular Research Institute, San Francisco. His Cardiothoracic Surgery residency and fellowship was at Emory University, Atlanta followed by a fellowship in Congenital Cardiovascular Surgery at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Christopher Hall
Chief Marketing and Clinical Operations Officer

Chris Hall joined the Company in 2001 and is responsible for management of the 4myheart program as delivered to patients. He manages the marketing efforts, product development, IT efforts, and all clinical staff that provide the disease management program to patients. Before joining the Company, Mr. Hall served as Vice President, Product Management at Asimba, Inc., which was the leading web site providing diet, exercise, and personal wellness programming directly to consumers. It was sold to Weider Publications. Prior to Asimba, Mr. Hall worked in Business Development at Kenan Systems selling billing and customer applications to telecommunications carriers and did strategy consulting work at Symmetrix (Nextera). He has an M.B.A from Harvard University (1994) and a B.A. from DePauw University (1990).

G. Russell Warnick MS, MBA
Senior Vice President, Laboratory Operations and Chief Scientific Officer

Mr. Warnick, a biochemist, served as a Director of a US Army Referral Laboratory before joining the Northwest Lipid Research Clinic (LRC) of the University of Washington, Seattle where he was Director of the Lipoprotein Core Laboratory. He chaired the LRC Laboratory Method’s Committee, which coordinated the LRC laboratories and was instrumental in developing and improving methods for lipid/lipoprotein analysis.

Subsequently, Mr. Warnick founded and served as President of Pacific Biometrics,Inc., a specialty service laboratory supporting the diagnostics and pharmaceutical industries with advanced testing capabilities. He also established Pacific Biometrics Research Foundation, which continues to provide standardization and educational programs to improve quality in testing for lipids, lipoproteins and other diagnostics for chronic diseases including participating in as one of five US Cholesterol Reference Method Laboratory Network.

Mr. Warnick continued involvement in the US Army Medical Service Corps as a reservist, advising in improving reliability of lipid testing among the military services and retiring as a Lt. Colonel.

Mr. Warnick has been active throughout his career in improving reliability of cholesterol and related lipoprotein measurements, serving on American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC) committees and the National Cholesterol Education Program expert laboratory panels as well as CDC sponsored expert panels for bone markers and for c-reactive protein. He has been involved in international collaborative research including 10 years as laboratory liaison for a US-China joint cardiovascular research program. He was a founder of the Lipids and Lipoproteins Division of the AACC (now the Lipoproteins and Vascular Diseases Division), serving as the first Chairman during provisional status and also the first elected Chairman. Since 1990, he has edited The Fats of Life, the Division Newsletter and the Handbook of Lipoprotein Testing, which has become the primary reference source for cardiovascular diagnostics. He has authored over 200 publications, primarily in the lipid and osteoporosis fields and lectured extensively throughout the world.

Jennifer E. Mason, RN, MS
Vice President, Clinical Affairs

Ms. Mason joined Berkeley HeartLab in 2000. As Vice President Clinical Affairs, Ms. Mason is responsible for the integration of the latest medical knowledge in the field of lipid research and its clinical application to promote the optimization of patient therapeutic outcomes. In addition, Ms. Mason is involved with the implementation and auditing of Berkeley HeartLab’s HIPAA and Regulatory Compliance Programs for field sales and clinical personnel.

When Ms. Mason joined Berkeley HeartLab, she brought with her 20 years of cardiovascular nursing experience. Sixteen of those years were focused on creating, executing, and managing successful disease management programs including lipids, CHF, hypertension, and anticoagulation in private practice, hospital based, and managed care settings. During this time, Ms. Mason also designed and managed a successful cardiac and vascular rehabilitation program in the San Francisco Bay Area. From 1995-2000, Ms. Mason was principle in Mason Clinic Consultants working with pharmaceutical companies sharing her disease management expertise nationwide. Ms. Mason holds a BA from SUNY Stony Brook and a MS in educational psychology and statistics from SUNY Albany.
